Wellness Intelligence — Sleep

The Sleep Mandate.

Sleep quality has become the primary wellness criterion at the luxury tier. The viaive desk on which properties have genuinely built a sleep programme — and what that actually means.

The Baseline Evidence

Why Sleep Became the Metric.

The body's capacity for recovery during travel is diminished by the same stress responses that motivate high-achievers to take expensive trips. Cortisol disruption, jet lag, unfamiliar environments, altered food schedules — they compound. The research on sleep quality as the primary predictor of wellness programme outcomes has shifted how the serious operators build their programmes.

The desk's criterion: a genuine sleep programme addresses the bedroom environment (darkness, sound, temperature, air quality), the pre-sleep protocol (what is offered before lights-out), and the morning protocol (how the guest is brought back to wakefulness). Mattress quality alone is not a sleep programme.

Programme Standards

What a Sleep Programme Requires.

The Environment

Complete blackout capability. Active sound management (not passive noise). Temperature control to sub-19°C. Air purification or natural ventilation. An air quality index below 10 AQI in the room. Properties that meet all five: Six Senses, Aman, and approximately 40 independent properties the desk has verified directly.

The Protocol

A written pre-sleep protocol is the mark of a serious programme: a recommended screen-off window, a sleep-focused beverage menu, a turndown service that includes aromatherapy or a short breathing exercise card. The desk distinguishes between properties that have thought about this and properties that have not.

The Morning

Natural light access on waking. A morning protocol that does not immediately re-engage the stress response. No digital alarm clock in the room. Breakfast that supports cortisol management. The morning is the output measurement of the sleep programme — where properties either deliver or fail.

The Desk's Sleep Tier.

Tier 1 — Full Programme

Clinique La Prairie (Montreux), Lanserhof Tegernsee, SHA Wellness (Alicante), and Six Senses Douro Valley are the desk's current verified Tier 1 properties. All have a sleep physician or certified sleep coach on staff.

Tier 2 — Serious Integration

Six Senses network broadly, Aman spa properties, Bamford Haybarn, The Ranch Malibu. Sleep is integrated rather than led by a specialist. Genuinely effective for guests without a clinical sleep disorder.

What to Avoid

Properties that describe a "pillow menu" as a sleep programme. Organic mattress sourcing is not a sleep intervention. Lavender oil is not a protocol. The desk has a long list of properties that market sleep without delivering it — available to clients on request.

Sleep is the ROI.
